PCOS Causes Facial Hair Growth in Women
…but there’s more to it than that
September is PCOS Awareness Month! This health condition affects nearly one in 10 women of childbearing age in the U.S. and is a leading cause of infertility, according to the Office on Women’s Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Read on to learn more about PCOS and see how we can help women affected.
What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a health condition that causes a reproductive hormonal imbalance in women, resulting in a lack of estrogen in the body and/or higher levels of insulin and androgen (also known as a male hormone). It’s normal for women to produce small amounts of androgen. However, higher-than-average production can lead to PCOS. While the exact cause is unknown, medical experts believe the condition is hereditary, and women are typically diagnosed in their 20s or 30s after having difficulties becoming pregnant.
The Symptoms Include?
One of the more recognizable symptoms is excess hair growth, also known as hirsutism. Other symptoms range from ovarian cysts, which can go undetected, to irregular periods, weight gain, acne and thinning of hair on the scalp, according to the Office on Women’s Health.
Hirsutism, you say?
Hirsutism is excess hair growth in women caused by either a lack of estrogen or excess androgen production in the body. Women usually experience this male pattern of hair growth on the areas of the body like the face, back and chest where men typically have it. Unwanted hair growth is one of the major concerns among women with PCOS as the excess facial and body hair is more noticeable than other symptoms.
We have a solution to unwanted hair!
While a cure for PCOS has not been developed, Ideal Image can help reduce unwanted facial and body hair and improve self-confidence. Using laser hair removal, we can destroy hair follicles in a matter of minutes. The number of treatments will depend on the individual’s response to laser hair removal and the amount of hair needed to be removed. A series of treatments are needed to achieve desired results and a higher chance of permanent hair reduction.
